EMV Cash & Check Cards

  • What are EMV chip cards?

An EMV chip card, also known as a smart card, is a debit or credit card that contains a microchip that enhances the security of your card during point-of-sale transactions. These cards can be used in over 130 countries. EMV chip cards use a security standard originally developed by Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) as a way to prevent fraud resulting in theft and counterfeiting.

  • How do EMV chip cards protect my information?

Each time you use your card at a chip-enabled terminal, the microchip generates a unique one-time use code, making it impossible to counterfeit or use fraudulently for
    in-store purchases.

  • Where can I use my new card?

When using your card at chip-enabled terminals, following these instructions:

    1. Insert your card, face up and chip first.
    2. Leave the card in the terminal during the entire transaction.
    3. Follow the instructions on the screen and either sign your name or enter your PIN as needed. Be sure to remove your card and take your receipt when the transaction is complete.
  • Using Your Card at a Chip-Enabled Terminal

Insert your card, face up and chip end into the chip-enabled terminal. Leave the card in the terminal during the entire transaction. Follow instructions on the screen, select CREDIT or enter your PIN as needed. You may be prompted to sign your name. Be sure to remove your card and take your receipt when the transaction is complete.

  • Can I still swipe my card to pay?

Yes. If a merchant does not have a chip-enabled terminal, you can continue to swipe your card to pay.

  • What should I do with my old Western State Bank card once I receive my EMV chip card?

Once you activate your new EMV chip card, please destroy your existing card for security reasons.

  • Will my EMV chip card work at ATMs?

Yes. Your card will work at both a chip-enabled ATM and at ATMs where only magnetic stripe transactions are accepted.

  • Do I need to notify the bank before I travel internationally if I plan to use my EMV card?

To help prevent interruption when using your card, we recommend you contact the bank to place a travel notice on any card(s) you plan to use while traveling.

  • How should I use my EMV card for online or phone purchases?

You can provide your card information as you have done in the past. EMV Cash and Check Cards will not change the way payments are made online or by phone.
